I want you to be honest with yourself. Are you living the life you really want or the life you think you want? A lot of us get caught in the trap of creating a life based on the things we think we want, things that are based on what is outside of ourselves but not truly of ourselves. As a result, we might feel hollow or as if our soul is empty. I believe what we truly want is to live a life of fulfillment.
What Is Fulfillment?
Having a fulfilling life means finding your authentic self and embracing it to the best of your ability. Your authentic self is revealed when you live according to your inner experience. However, since we are constantly bombarded by pressures from society and those around us, it can be difficult to even recognize our inner experience.
Become Aware of Your Inner Experience
This is not the first time I have discussed the importance of expanding our awareness and the power awareness gives us. We cannot expect to know what we truly want if we are blind to our inner selves or distracted by false narratives.
Let’s do an exercise. Take a moment to ponder your dream life, whether it involves landing your ideal job, having a big family, being connected to a close-knit group of friends, or having time for your favorite leisure activities. What kinds of thoughts and dialogues pop into your mind? What sensations and emotions do you experience along with those thoughts? Do you notice yourself running away from any thoughts or feelings? Ask yourself what you really want. Listen to your gut. It’s okay if this is difficult for you. Becoming aware of your honest feelings and intentions takes courage. However, this awareness is important for recognizing whether or not you are looking outward for inward satisfaction. It is also necessary for being able to express your emotions.
Find Your Purpose
When you become more aware of your inner experience, it is easier to discover your purpose in life. Think about it; if you are in tune with yourself and your inner desires, wouldn’t it be easier to know what you’re truly passionate about? Perhaps it’s starting your own business, or perhaps it’s being a parent. Your purpose does not need to change the world – you don’t need to be the next Nobel Prize winner. It can be whatever you find meaningful or whatever makes you happy. All that matters is that you’re doing it for your authentic self and not because of the expectations or ideals put on you.
Connect, Grow, and Be Happy
Finding your purpose in life is not the only ingredient for fulfillment. Life is more meaningful when you are able to connect with others who lift you up. Striving for personal growth also lends a sense of empowerment. Set goals and slowly chip away at them. You’d be surprised at how much you can accomplish with consistent effort. Finally, let yourself be happy. This is your one life to live and you deserve happiness. Accept that life will have its ups and downs and that that’s okay. No one’s life is perfect, even if it might seem so from afar. Plus, once you embrace your authentic self and live your life for yourself, you’ll be in better shape to deal with the woes of the world.
As I mentioned above, discovering your authentic self can be a challenging and frightening journey. I would be honored to assist you on this journey through in-person appointments as well as HIPAA-compliant virtual options. Contact me, today.
